Project Description

14. Please provide a paragraph or two describing the project, how the funding would be used, how it would be beneficial to the community, and any additional background information on why the project should be considered for federal funding.

The City of Meriden, CT will use federal funds to design and construct Phase III of the Quinnipiac River Linear Trail in Meriden, CT.  This project will complete approximately 1.5 miles of paved trail from Coe Ave to Columbus Park.  The trail will connect the recently completed 1.3 mile Quinnipiac River Gorge section to an existing City park.  The trail will provide pedestrian and bicycle access to four public schools including Platt High School, Lincoln Middle School, Benjamin Franklin Elementary School and the HC Wilcox Technical High School.  The Quinnipiac River Linear Trail is a part of a regional trail system that follows the Quinnipiac River and its tributaries through Wallingford, Cheshire and Meriden.  Past funding for the project was provided by grants from the US Department of Transportation and local funds.

The proposed improvements will provide numerous benefits to the City.  First, it offers outdoor enthusiasts an opportunity to experience the beauty and exhilaration of a river and gorge walk.  The trail provides several scenic viewing areas of the adjacent wetlands and of the Quinnipiac Gorge.  The trail, once home to the Waterbury-Cromwell railroad, features unique views of siltstone sediment walls.  Second, the project will provide safe bicycle and pedestrian access to four schools serving elementary, middle school and high school students.  Finally, the trail will provide a link in a regional trail system that serves both Meriden and central Connecticut.  The trail will be constructed to adhere to Americans with Disabilities requirements for handicapped accessibility.  Along with informational kiosks, wood rail fencing will be installed to ensure public safety.  The Quinnipiac River Linear Trail will be constructed by the City of Meriden and under the advisement of the Meriden Linear Trail Advisory Committee.  The trail utilizes the right-of-way of the Connecticut Light and Power Company which follows the alignment of the former Waterbury, Meriden and Connecticut River Railroad.
